Should I take a nap? It depends on what you are solving.
A short nap can help when you are unsafe with sleepiness. If nights are already hard, an afternoon nap often costs you bedtime.
Naps are one tool. The book shows when they help and when they cost you the night.

How this works
A nap is a loan against tonight. Sleep pressure builds while you are awake and drops when you sleep. That is why a long or late nap can make bedtime feel less sleepy, even if you needed the rest this afternoon.
When the problem is danger — drowsy driving, machinery, a job where a lapse is serious — a short nap of about 10 to 20 minutes can restore alertness for a while. In that case, getting home safely matters more than protecting tonight.
When the problem is insomnia at night, the cleaner experiment is usually to skip the nap and keep your wake time steady. After a single bad night, you may not need a nap if you can function; if you do, keep it short and earlier in the day. An ordinary afternoon slump can go either way: a brief nap, or rest without sleeping.
None of these times are laws. They are starting points so you can notice what your own nights do.
Questions people ask
- How long should a power nap be?
- About 10 to 20 minutes is a common starting point. Long enough to take the edge off, short enough that you are less likely to sink into deep sleep and wake groggy.
- Why do I feel worse after a long nap?
- If you sleep long enough to enter deeper sleep, waking from it can feel heavy for a few minutes. That grogginess is common and usually passes.
- Is napping bad for insomnia?
- It can be, if nights are already hard. A nap spends some of the sleepiness you need at bedtime. A week of skipping afternoon naps is a fair experiment.
- What's the latest time to nap?
- A rough starting point is to finish about seven hours before your usual bedtime. If it is later than that, non-sleep rest is often the kinder option — unless you are unsafe with sleepiness.
