How this works

Caffeine does not switch off at a fixed hour. It rises for a little while after a drink, then fades slowly. The time it takes to fall by half is often around five hours, but some people clear it faster and some much more slowly.

This tool uses a simple one-compartment sketch so you can see an estimate at bedtime, not a lab result. It is here to support a small experiment: keep everything else the same for about a week, move your last caffeinated drink roughly two hours earlier, and notice falling asleep and the next morning.

Chai, tea, cola and energy drinks count. Decaf is not zero, which is why a custom milligram option is there if you know your drink. If the picture looks messy, that is useful too — caffeine may not be your main lever, and the next tool to try might be timing, naps or how you close the day.

Questions people ask

How long does caffeine stay in your system?
It fades gradually. A common starting point is a half-life of about five hours, which means a noticeable amount can still be around at bedtime after an afternoon drink. People vary widely.
Does chai affect sleep?
Often, yes. Masala chai and milk tea still contain caffeine, typically less than a mug of coffee but enough to matter in the evening for some people.
Is decaf caffeine-free?
Not entirely. Decaf still carries a little caffeine. If you are sensitive, treat it as a smaller drink rather than a free pass.
Why doesn't coffee keep some people awake?
Genetics, habit, timing and what else is going on in the evening all play a part. If an earlier last drink changes nothing, caffeine may not be the main lever for you.
